What makes the Primos mentoring experience special?
The inspiration behind our name stems from the importance of family in Latino culture. Primos, Spanish for cousins, is a term of endearment that is often given to close friends considered part of the family. Because relation and family are central to the Latino family experience, we strive to build a family foundation into the mentoring experience, inviting the family unit to become a part of the mentoring experience.
We provide programming for parents and help create opportunities for mentors to get to know their mentee's family. We understand family support is crucial to student success. By focusing on family-like relationships, students are set up for long term success in many different environments. Our goal is for our mentors to be a positive presence in their mentees’ lives and achieve the status of becoming an honorary family member.

What do our mentors say about their experience?
Lucy HolguinMy mentee and I are two years in, and our mentoring relationship has blossomed! Jennifer and i were able to travel to Boston this year to visit her university for the fall. Both of us kept mentioning how grateful we were that Primos brought us together.

Alba RamirezI've had the pleasure serving as a mentor for April. I look forward to our weekly check-ins and cheering for her during her sports games. I'm constantly reminded how nerve-wrecking high school was, but April had been tackling it like a champ! Being a listening ear and supportive in her endeavors had definitely been a foundation in our relationship.

Mentors are a reliable, constant presence in the lives of their mentees. What is the pairing process like?
We have a very unique process for pairing our Primos. All mentors and mentee fill out an interest survey which includes everything from academics, music, sports, and career interests. Each mentor records a bio video of themselves. Students receive 3 videos of mentors who most closely match their interest and select their 1st and 2nd choice. This gives the students agency in their mentoring relationship! Who are the Primos mentees?
